What does learning in autonomy mean ?

What does learning in autonomy mean?

This means that we study 2 things:

We learn french in order to follow a course in french in the end of the first year.

We learn to learn to have the ability to continue to learn french for personnal needs after preparatory  classes. This doesn't mean learning alone,it means to be conscious and active in his apprenticeship.

The first step to the autonomy is to accept the responsability that I have in my apprenticeship as a student. The teacher doesn's always decide anymore what should I learn, with what and when, but I must accept the idea to share this responsability with a teacher. That is why, with the help of teachers,I have to

- participate in the planning of the work,

- think the way I learn,

- engage myself to work alone on a specific goal,

- try to evaluate myself because I am the only one who knows if I master well or not a specific point.
The thing is to understand that we have many occasions in our everyday life to learn and we don't realize it. We don't only learn in a class roo, with a teacher explaining a notion and a student who takes notes. There are some ways to apprentice without a teacher(TV,newspapers,films...) and there are some other ways except waıtıng the teacher to speak or gıve us exercıses. By usıng varıous locatıons,we find other apprentice ways.

Finally, the thing is to create occasions, use, test language: on the campus of GSU, there are some francophone people (teachers,Erasmus students). In Istambul we can easily find a place where french is spoken (French Institut of Istambul,Sultanahmet...).

Why learn in autonomy?

Why learn in autonomy?

The world moves, the time we were doing the same professional thing in the whole life and place has ended.                                                                                                                                             The crafts evolve faster than professional life, there is always a need to question ourselves and learn new technologies.

The world is having a walk, we have connections very often with other cultures, other languages. We may be moved to travel or to work in another country.

The information world evlolves, we can easily be connected with a foreign language,a different culture from ours.

Consequence:

Apprenticeships are no longer reserved to the period of scolarship or university foramtion, but we learn all along our life, a craft, languages, technics, new settings. By ourselves, in autonomy, we should requestion ourselves, learn new things, know how things are done.  It si getting imperative to know how to learn, it also means to study one's future craft or a foreign language.

But knowledge of learning, in other words autonomy in apprenticeships, is not innate. It is also taught.

Why GSU?

Why GSU?

Because Turkey is one of the countries who have signed Europe Council which counts 46 members and it would be a shame to not make GSU students gain profit of Europe Council ; Because GSU takes part of the University Consortium which is able to send and recieve students via Erasmus, that means that Galatasaray students will have the possibility to be integrated in Europe education systems via the autonomy notion;

Because GSU students might work in other countries  on elder posts, having connection with many foreign students and therefore, they will have to adapt to different places, cultures, variable languages.

So, the Galatasaray University offers students not only learning french but learning to learn by himself along their whole life the apprenticeship of french. Than students can use those skills for other languages.

Origin of autonomy

Origin of autonomy

This is absolutely not a new notion, but as we hear about languages apprenticeship, this notion had been developped and concretized by Europe Council since the early 80s.

This organism (different from EU) operates in favor of linguistic diversity and of languages apprenticeship in order to strengthen and deepen mutual understanding between the citizens and to maintain social cohesion. So if I can communicate with people of different countries, I will better understand their culture, their way of thinking, their habits, therefore I will integrate easier in the citizen life of those countries. The more languages I know (even partially),  the more I develop an aptitude to better understand cultures and people.

Thus Europe Council proposes all State-members to intense the languages apprenticeship to favorise a bigger mobility,an international communication more effective which respects identities, the cultural diversity and all languages.

It provides tools allowing many countries to have a common basis for languages apprenticeship for a random language, the level has to be:

- objectives (what should I be able to do in a foreign language),

- contents (what I will learn),

- evaluation (what should I be able to do with a language).
Thus, it is getting possible to compare levels between languages regardless of the country in which I learned this language.

Those settings will be used in GSU to allow students to integrate easier in other establishments of languages, to adapt in other countries.
